Root Crops – Beetroot

$4.00

Beetroot, scientifically known as Beta vulgaris subsp. vulgaris, is a versatile and vibrant vegetable that adds both color and flavor to a wide range of culinary creations. As a biennial plant, beetroot is primarily grown for its fleshy, bulbous root, which comes in various hues, including deep purple, golden, and striped varieties.

Beetroot thrives in a sunny position in the garden, requiring at least 6 hours of direct sunlight each day. It prefers well-drained soil that is fertile, loose, and rich in organic matter. When it comes to spacing, it is recommended to plant beetroot seeds or seedlings approximately 10 to 15 centimetres apart, allowing enough room for the roots to develop properly. The first harvest of beetroot can be done approximately 60 to 80 days after planting, depending on the desired size. For a continuous supply, stagger the planting every few weeks.

To ensure an abundant crop, it is advisable to plant around 15 to 20 beetroot plants per square meter. With its earthy sweetness and versatility in salads, roasted dishes, and even desserts, beetroot is a colourful and nutritious addition to any kitchen.
