Legumes – Beans – Broadbean

$4.00

Broadbeans, scientifically known as Vicia faba, are a popular legume crop cherished for their tender pods and delicious beans. They are an annual plant that belongs to the Fabaceae family. Broadbeans thrive in a position that receives full sun to partial shade. When it comes to soil type, they prefer well-drained and fertile soil that is rich in organic matter. For spacing, it is recommended to plant Broadbeans approximately 10 to 15 centimetres apart in rows that are spaced 60 to 90 centimetres apart.

This spacing allows the plants to have enough room to grow and support their upright growth habit. The first harvest of Broadbeans can typically be done once the pods have reached their full size but are still tender and green. This usually occurs around 12 to 16 weeks after sowing, depending on the variety and growing conditions. It is best to harvest Broadbeans when the pods are plump and the beans inside are still small and tender. When considering the quantity to plant, it depends on the desired yield and consumption.

Planting multiple rows of Broadbeans can ensure a generous harvest, with approximately 15 to 20 plants per square meter being a common guideline. Broadbeans are a versatile ingredient used in various culinary preparations, including soups, stews, salads, and dips. They not only provide a rich source of protein and dietary fibre but also add a delightful texture and flavour to dishes.
