Leafy Greens – Silverbeet – Fordhook Giant
$4.00
Silverbeet, scientifically known as Beta vulgaris subsp. vulgaris var. cicla, is a versatile leafy vegetable commonly grown for its nutritious and flavourful leaves. As a biennial plant, silverbeet belongs to the same family as beetroot but is primarily cultivated for its foliage rather than its roots. It thrives in a variety of positions in the garden, from full sun to partial shade, making it adaptable to different growing conditions.
Silverbeet prefers well-drained soil that is fertile, loamy, and rich in organic matter. When it comes to spacing, it is recommended to plant silverbeet seedlings or seeds approximately 30 to 40 centimeters apart, allowing ample room for the large, leafy growth. The first harvest of silverbeet leaves can typically be done approximately 6 to 8 weeks after planting, with successive harvests possible throughout the growing season.
To ensure a continuous supply, it is advisable to plant around 6 to 9 silverbeet plants per square meter. With its mild and slightly earthy flavour, silverbeet is a versatile leafy green that can be used in salads, stir-fries, quiches, and various other dishes.
