Brassicas – Cauliflower

$4.00

Cauliflower, scientifically known as Brassica oleracea var.botrytis, is a versatile and nutritious vegetable that is loved for its compact, white curd-like head. This cool-season annual plant thrives in a position that receives full sun to partial shade. Cauliflower prefers well-drained soil that is fertile, rich in organic matter, and slightly acidic.

When it comes to spacing, it is recommended to plant the seedlings approximately 45 to 60 centimetres apart, allowing sufficient room for the heads to develop fully. The first harvest of cauliflower heads can typically be done around 60 to 80 days after planting, depending on the specific variety and desired head size. To ensure a continuous supply, successive plantings every few weeks are recommended.

When considering the quantity to plant, it is advisable to aim for around 2 to 3 cauliflower plants per square meter. With its mild, slightly sweet flavour and versatile culinary uses, cauliflower is a popular vegetable in Australian kitchens, where it can be enjoyed roasted, steamed, mashed, or used as a low-carb substitute for rice or pizza crusts.
